The search for an internet marketing “silver bullet” is a journey that is filled with a long line of challenges that most people don’t realize when they first get started. The road is a confusing series of twists and turns and anyone who ventures forward has to make their way through a vanity fair of scam artists trying to sell you their latest worry-free money-making wonder widget with the idea of separating you and the contents of your wallet. Navigating through this unscrupulous maze is often enough to make the most staunch of online adventurers to give up the chase altogether.

So what keeps us going and what are we really hoping to find?

Recently, I did a survey where I asked a list of about 3000 online marketers what was most important to them when looking at programs and internet marketing business opportunities. I was overwhelmed with the passion and intensity of the responses I received.

The number one response to the survey should probably not be a surprise, but I am amazed at how often this foundational ingredient is absent in online promotions. If this element is present, the job is more than halfway complete. When it’s not, the entire process is doomed to failure. The thing most people are looking for is honesty.

The majority of people who are working on the internet to earn some extra cash have been taken by at least one scam along the way. The program makes promises that suddenly disappear once your payment has gone through. These hucksters are often very skilled at deceit and deception and their copywriting skills and near-hypnotic persuasion methods convince the unwary traveler to pull out their credit card and enter the information into the form. After hitting the submit button they are often left with little more than a glop of worthless cyber-poo or, on the other end of the spectrum, as overly complicated “system” that managed to take hours and hours of your time without really teaching you anything worthwhile.

When prospects are looking at you product or business opportunity, the number one thing that they are concerned about is that you are honest. They are almost expecting it to be a scam or a rip-off. In addition to “being” honest, you need to “convince” them that you are honest and that you can be trusted. Unless you are able to do this, they will never do business with you.

The second highest response from the survey was that people are looking for someone who will actively help them and answer questions if they have them. This doesn’t mean that you have to pick up the phone and talk with every prospect, but it does mean that you need to have a good system of communication in place where people can give and receive feedback with a real human being on the other end. Investing in a solid “support desk” software program can be hugely beneficial for both you and your customers.

The bottom line is that people want to be treated with respect. Many marketers forget what it was like when they first got started online. They forget that people don’t yet know some of the things that they now take for granted. As a result, they often use terms or refer to processes that are completely foreign and confusing to the person just starting out. Having someone willing to help them to understand the material or a particular process is invaluable.

If you can demonstrate that you are honest and can provide real help to those who purchase your product or join your opportunity, your online business will quickly skyrocket to success. These fundamental attributes are sadly missing within the ranks of online marketing, but when they appear, they consistently attract loyal followers who will join you in building your business. It is one of the best ways to build long-term success online.
