October 20, 2009 | Leave a Comment
A fungal infection, a yeast infection happens when the fungus Candida multiplies too much. It is an organism that naturally occurs but held in balance by good bacteria and a strong immune system. Sometimes if a body is undergoing hormonal changes like menstruation or pregnancy, or some drugs or some personal habits can negatively affect the chemical balance of the body leading to the overgrowth of the fungus. It can affect men and women but in particular women as over 75% will suffer from a vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime.
Itching is the more common symptom and probably the worst. It can adversely affect people’s lives when it is very severe. There are other symptoms to look out for as well such as a white, lumpy, thick discharge, a nasty odor, irritation and redness around the labia, urinating can be painful and the vulvae can be swollen.
Some women experience all symptoms some experience just one or two, whichever you have though they are unpleasant and uncomfortable. Relief can be found from several places and in several forms. Your doctor can prescribe creams or treatments or you can get fungal creams over the counter from pharmacies or even from grocery stores. They all are designed to help find balance again and are meant to relieve itching and other symptoms.
There is also the option of using home remedies to treat yourself. Yogurt due to it containing good bacteria – probiotics, is a popular choice and is effective. Taking a bath with apple cider vinegar added to the water can also be soothing. Garlic inserted into the vaginal canal or eaten can also help with the symptoms due to its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.
If you are lucky enough not to have a yeast infection yet, there are things you can do to keep it that way. Stop wearing tight clothing and underwear like pantyhose. Wear breathable materials like cotton panties. You do not want to keep the genital area constantly warm, damp and dark as this is the perfect environment for the fungus to breed in. Drink plenty of water and have a diet that is low in yeast products and sugars. Also make sure you sleep enough each night to ensure your immune system is at the top of its game.
