5 Tips On Measuring Curtains
November 7, 2009 | Leave a Comment
The first step in making a curtain is to take measurements of the desired space where the installation of curtains will be done. People can take the measurements themselves or even ask an expert to take the dimensions.
A curtains size should be as per the required window, door or any other area of a living space. If the measurement and dimensions are not noted correctly, the curtains can look quite weird. The whole interior of that place can go wrong if the curtains are loose as they look shabby. The stitching of curtains can be quite expensive along with the material hence people should be very careful about the measurements.
This important attribute requires proper concentration and focus when one is doing it therefore it is necessary to be at ease and not rush things while taking the measurements for a curtain.
Secondly, the type of the fabric should be kept in mind while taking measurements. Curtains are available in a vast variety. There are certain types of fabrics which are stretchable. Hence, care should be taken while measuring such fabric. This can be a tricky job because stretchable fabrics give a different measurement each time they are measured. If you are an expert in measuring such fabrics then it should not be a problem at all. To be on the safer side, it is better to hire the service of a professional who is experienced in this area.
While taking the measurements one must always remember that fabric can have the tendency to shrink after one wash therefore it is always suggested to keep some extra cloth for the sides as well as the base area of the curtain. To avoid any complications in the curtains, it is essential to keep a few inches extra for the cloth, while taking the measurement for the curtains length and breadth.
Fourthly, if you are measuring the curtains yourself, then it is important to remember the scale in which you are noting down the measurements. You and the tailor who is supposed to stitch the curtain for you should have the same scales. For example, if you have measured the door frames in inches then you should buy the cloth in inches too and tell the tailor to cut it in inches as well. In case of any sort of confusion about the scale, i.e. if anyone, you or the tailor, mix up the measurements in yards or inches, a major disaster is bound to happen.
Lastly and most importantly, the width of the pole of the window or of the curtain track should be measured, and not of the window itself. Likewise, when you are measuring the length of the curtain, keep in mind where you want the curtain to drop: to the floor, to the window sill or below the window sill. Moreover, the length should be measured from the top of the rack to the point where you want the curtain to end.
