No Its A BMX - Flying High

By Bassannio Madox | November 22, 2008

Along time ago when I was just a child, I wanted a BMX bike so bad! Santa never brought me one and birthdays came and went too. As a family we struggled financially so I had to make do with a second hand, re painted, black racer bicycle.

I did love that ricketty old bike and indeed was grateful you must understand but I still looked on in envy at all the other BMX bikes. Perhaps because I believed I could fly over the garden, house and beyond at that point made me want one even more. I hadnt grasped the fact that the BMX bikes in the movie E.T. had more than a helping hand in getting them off the ground! Flying over large obstacles in BMX video games didnt seem to compensate.

Christmas mornings became a spot the who has got a new BMX competition as all the kids raced up and down the streets and pavements, making impromptu ramps with old splintered planks of wood and a few bricks. There was no doubting the huge success that BMX had become.

Strangely enough, despite the many stunts these bikes are capable of performing, none of them ever did fly over the house, and not even Mad Jimmy from number 14 could do it and boy did he try!

More than 30 years later and although BMX bikes still cannot fly they are still very cool and are more popular than ever. For the first time in its history in 2008 they became a successful part of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Racing was the only BMX discipline at the Olympics this time around but Freestyle is also hugely popular and surely it’s only a matter of time before this too takes its place on the biggest world stage.

People at the top of the BMX sport are extremely dedicated to perfecting their skills and what you see may look easy, but just try it yourself to find out otherwise. Flatland BMX, another discipline is particularly fascinating to watch!

Each discipline requires a BMX bike to be designed specifically for it, as the requirements are quite different, with the weight of the bike being of particular importance. With popularity comes branding and sponsorship and of course there are many, many different styles and BMX bikes with a unique appearance to represent this.

Famous riders get bikes designed not only with their name branding it, but often with their own specifications too.

So, whether an old pro, new to the sport or just looking to buy a bike as a Christmas or birthday gift for a relative, choice will certainly not be a problem when it comes to BMX.
