Procrastination is a real killer when it comes to getting things done. As the saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Oftentimes, the hardest part of something is actually just getting it started. That’s why I’m writing these five secrets for beating procrastination. Armed with them, you too can beat your procrastination.
Keep Your Butt in the Chair
I once had a professor tell me that the key to having good study habits was “keeping your butt in the chair.” The same technique can help you beat procrastination. Put yourself in a room with what you need to get done, and remove all of your distractions. Then, keep your butt in the chair. If you don’t allow yourself to do anything else, sooner or later you’ll do what you’re supposed to.
Ask For Help
Ask a friend or a loved one to help you beat your procrastination. Ask them to keep on top of you about what you’re doing and what you’re supposed to be doing. Tell them that if they catch you procrastinating that they should set you back on the right course. A little nagging goes a long way.
Reward Yourself for Starting Early
It’s not easy to work hard. When you work hard, you achieve more, but working hard is an achievement in itself. Therefore, reward yourself for it. Find something that you love, and reward yourself with it when you work hard for a set amount of time. Don’t give in and reward yourself prematurely, it will only hurt.
Prioritize and Budget Your Time Accordingly
One of the best things you can do to manage your time is to make sure you’re spending it on the right things. Would your boss rather have project A done and B not started, or have you halfway through both? Find out what the important things are and start with them. After those are done, you’ll have more time for the less important stuff.
Keep at It
Don’t wait until later to start your battle against procrastination, because if you do you’ve already lost.
