November 2, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Wedding Cake Toppers are those little “figures” that sit atop a wedding cake screaming “Oh, Oh, Oh…I’m Unique…I Say Something…Look At Me!” There is a great variety of toppers available on the market today. Yes, we’ve come a long ways since the humble beginnings years ago. Let’s spend a few minutes learning of their story.
How about a formal description? Okay. A wedding cake topper is a small model or figurine that sits on top of a wedding cake. Often made of plastic, it normally depicts the couple getting married in their wedding attire. Normally, but these days there are many variations on the theme.
After the description the history is next. Although no records exist of the first time someone put a little figure on top of a wedding cake, we do have a number of traditions. One very popular tradition states that a bride was getting married, and she was trying to figure out some way in which she could depict the love that she and her future husband shared for each other. Her father happened to be a baker, and she gave him the assignment. Being a baker he naturally baked a wedding cake, but he added a little something to the top of the cake. He put a figurine of his daughter and her future husband on top. This was to exemplify that love that these two young people shared for each other as they started their new life together.
Now we have no way to verify this “story”, but it might be factual. Factual or not, it does foreshadow the prominence that the cake topper would have on the wedding day. Surely this baker didn’t realize what he had started? He would start something that would change the “big day” for millions of couples!
Elvis and Rock & Roll are iconic symbols of the 1950’s. But what about the wedding cake topper? They had their place as well since many, many young men were returning from years of war and starting to wed and raise families.
Today we see that the toppers are as popular as ever. They have changed somewhat to reflect the times, but they are popular none-the-less. Today you can get toppers that depict mixed race marriages, and same-sex marriages as well. Many humorous wedding toppers are being sold these days. One depicts the bride grabbing her groom by the collar…preventing him from running away from the altar. Another shows her dragging him back to the altar after he has made his getaway. Some toppers even depict the various hobbies that the happy couple can enjoy together.
