The international student often has a dilemma – how to see the USA in a sometimes limited amount of time and money? In a geographically large area like the US, it is quite impossible to see it all. The student must therefore pick and choose, often selecting cities that are the most unique, the most fun, the most cultural, or the most “American”.

Boston Academy of English offers a unique look at the top ten US cities for international visitors to experience. While these are the opinions of one, they are shared by many native US citizen as well as those who have visited from abroad.

1. New York City, “The Big Apple”

New York City is the heart of America in so many ways. Citizens of the world have heard of the amazing experiences awaiting them on a trip to the Big Apple. New York City has the best restaurants and entertainment, the tallest skyscrapers, the brightest nightlife, all open and waiting for you. New York is incredibly international as you can find neighborhood communities representing the world. However, the many adventures in NY can be tainted by the rudeness of many New Yorkers. Many New Yorkers have reputations of being busy, rushed, and impatient.

2. Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is home to more national treasures and monuments than any other city in the US. Washington is home to the “Mall” featuring symmetrical displayed galleries, museums, and monuments that are relatively free of charge. Take time to visit Washington D.C. while in the US.

3. Boston, Massachusetts

This city really has it all, and is the location of more students per capita than anywhere else. Sure, Harvard and MIT are here, but so are more than 100 colleges and universities, and it is rumored that the best English is spoken here. The vibe is European – summer and autumn are particularly beautiful.

4. San Francisco, California

Perhaps the most beautiful of American cities, S.F. is built on on and around a hilly peninsula that is served by the antique cable car system. Great tourist destination, with Fishermans Wharf, Alcatraz prison, and the Golden Gate bridge. Mild weather and a very tolerant, “anything goes” atmosphere.

5. The Windy City, Chicago

Chicago is a city with it’s roots deeply planted in the heart of music. Chicago is a large city with superb restaurants and sophisticated amenities all while maintaining the small town feel with their friendliness. Chicago is a great middle point to visit on your trip across the US from West to East coast.

6. LA, California

LA is like a series of highways connected together overlapping than a city with a clear center to it. You will need a car and a lot of patience but making the drive to the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica, star watching in Hollywood, shopping on Rodeo Drive, and staring at the mansions of Beverly Hills is worth the trip. The area is very spread out and overall there is a mellow feel to the entire area.

7. Miami, Florida

All without a passport you can be transported to Latin America and tropical paradise in Maimi Florida. The beaches are amazing, the Latin flair is addictive, and the people are energetic, loud, and a blast to be around.

8. Orlando, home of Disney World

You will not find yourself lost as Orlando is a city run around the theme parks they offer and there are so many signs pointing you in the right directions. Best to take the many busses offered than to drive yourself. But the fun, thrills, and adventure you can have in Orlando are the memories worth making.

9. Las Vegas, “the city that never sleeps”

If you want a non-stop party from morning ’til night then Las vegas is the city for you. With casinos galore, shows that make you cheer, great food, and shopping from around the world Las Vegas is a city that has something for everyone. Just don’t count on that something being the jackpot. That takes a whole lot of luck!

10. San Diego, California

Along with is miles of beautiful beaches and fantastic weather, San Diego is home to World-renowned Balboa Park. Balboa Park is comprised of fifteen museums, various arts and international culture associations, as well as the San Diego Zoo, making it one of the nation’s largest cultural and entertainment complexes.
