When one talks about the events in Florence Italy, they must be prepared for a long and exciting discussion. There are events taking place in this beautiful city on a weekly basis throughout the year. In some months these events last up to a week.

January begins with parties, parades, and fireworks on New Year’s Eve followed by Fashion Show week which lasts through to the end of the month. A person can participate from the beginning of the year and enjoy the shows brought by fashion designers from all over the world.

In February Florence hosts the biggest carnival in Italy. This carnival lasts the entire month and the city is alive with festivals, parties, parades, and street performers. People coming to the events in Florence Italy will find that spending time with the people of Florence and the performers of the Carnival give one a view of the traditions that are throughout Italy.

In April there are regular festivals and parades surrounding religious holidays. The Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart) begins this beautiful season with fireworks which are lit by a dove that descends from the local cathedral on a wire. This is followed by food, festivities, and fun.

In May, the Festa del Grillo/Cricket Festival is held and crickets in woven cages are released by their owners for good luck. This festival includes parades, food, wine, and dancing. Through the rest of May and early June the Maggio Musicale is held celebrating the city’s major arts festival. This event in Florence Italy include concerts, dancing, outdoor theatre, and ballet performances.

June is also the host of the Calcio in Costume. This game is a combination of football and rugby. It starts with a parade and festival. Costumed football players come from all over the region to play this game. When one is ready for a more artistic party, the Estate Fiesolano is held which is a festival celebrating music, arts, drama, and film.

From July through December one is met with a parade, party, festival or dance on a weekly basis in Florence. The Festival Pucciniano which performs the maestro’s operas is held in a open air theater by the lake.

The Giostra Del Saraceno/Joust of the Saracen which is a medieval-style joust held that lasts from September through October. The joust starts with a parade with participants wearing costumes from the period and ends with a party at the Piazza Grande.
