The Purse Party: A New Trend In Handbags

One of the current handbag trends that you may not be aware of is purse parties. You could believe (especially if you’re very male or very young) that handbags are really that: bags that you hold in your hand, designed to keep your important things organized and with you everywhere you go. Things that include your cash, credit cards, checks, keys, driver’s license, hair brush, nail file, medications, and anything else you’ll need when you’re away from the house.

But it’s not so that handbags, or purses, are strictly for the purpose of carrying your stuff. Their secondary function is to be fashion accessories. Historically, as fashion accessory, purses have been expected to closely match your shoes, and your purse and shoes together are supposed to reasonably match your outfit. These expectations don’t seem to be as strong in today’s fashion world, where so often anything seems to go. Or perhaps it’s more the ideas about matching that have changed.

Another modern function of handbags is status symbol. Any current fashion magazine has pictures of handbags that cost thousands of dollars-each! Any celebrity magazine is likely to have photo validation of people actually owning these bags. Some online sites even give avid designer-bag collectors photo opportunities to show off their collections.

There is also online support for the opposite end of the handbag-loving spectrum-people who create their own handbags from anything and everything, including recycled scarves, neckties, pockets, clothing labels, wallpaper, trash bags, heirlooms, maps, soccer balls, food wrappers, t-shirts, memorabilia, anything vintage, photos, soda-can tabs, you name it! There are free tutorials and patterns to help people knit, embroider, paint, stencil, stamp, cross-stitch, crochet, bead, weave, quilt, dye, collage, appliqu, modge podge, hand stitch, and silk-screen their own purses. There are instructions on how to memorialize a favorite, worn-out t-shirt in handbag format. There’s even a pattern for making your own party centerpiece (in the shape of a purse) out of a watermelon!

For those of you who are somewhere in between wealthy designer-bag-collectors and handy at-home recycling designers, there are purse parties. A purse party is the pleasant in-home get-together your relative, friend, neighbor, or acquaintance invites you to so you can see the latest trend in purses, such as the affordable, stylish handbags (large and small) that have interchangeable exteriors. These handbags make it delightful to change a purse in order to match your outfit or your mood. You never again have to stress over moving items from one purse to another. In a couple of seconds, you simply change the outer shell of your purse for the one you prefer. Your collection of shells folds up into almost no space at all. The second-best thing about this handbag-after the long-overdue interchangeable-exterior concept-is that it doesn’t require wealth to have a purse matching every outfit and to seem like you own many gorgeous bags.

If you feel out-of-the-loop on handbag trends, perhaps it’s your chance for a purse party.
